UniFlip, based in Denmark, calls itself a Self Service Publisher System which you can use to create flip flash magazines, catalogs, brochures & reports from Adobe PDF, Microsoft Office and Open Office documents. The flip flash magazine thus created can then be downloaded, hosted, emailed or burned/stored on a CD/DVD/USB. The best thing about UniFlip is that it provides an 8 days FREE TRIAL to convert documents to flip flap versions, though it requires registration through an email address. It’s not required to validate the email address which can be termed as a flaw in the system but we see it as a marketing measure till they grab some bigger chunk of the market share.

We used UniFlip’s free services today in order to see its quality of conversion & write this article on them by converting the March 2010′s digital version of Reader’s Digest. The file was over 33MB in size and the system uploaded it without any problem, thanks to the 8 days FREE TRIAL. UniFlip’s system took around 1 hour to convert the file into a flip flash file and the experience was no less than awesome. There was nowhere stamp on the pages, though on the header & footer, and the movie got streamed very soon. The pages get scrolled as you move up or down. UniFlip provided the zooming level to 100% only while the next page is streamed quickly in the background. UniFlip’s system also provides you a link where you can see index of all of the pages changed from PDF to Flash.

The flip flash version of March 2010′s digital version of Reader’s Digest can be seen at http://flipflashpages.uniflip.com/2/29320/52947/pub/ until 18th of March, 2010. UniFlip enables you to provide a title, description & keyword for the flip flash page for SEO purposes, plus you can also put tracking code (like Google Analytics) to keep a track of visitors if you choose them as a host. You would only be able to download your PDF to Flash movie if you are a paid subscriber of UniFlip and it then enables you to remove “Powered by UniFlip” stamp. The paid version also allows you to add background music/video to a PDF to Flash presentation.

With 8 days FREE Trial, you would be able to convert 3 files from PDF to Flash but you will not be able to download them. The prices start from US$ 38 per publication plus some extra one time fee for the removal of “Powered by UniFlip” stamp. You have the facility to pay through PayPal, Master Card, Visa and American Express cards.

While browsing through the Internet for some more PDF to Flash resources, we incidentally encountered link to the www.pdfmenot.com website a number of times. In order to have a look at the service, we visited the website and found it to be owned by the Google and moving to https://docs.google.com/viewer. Our curiosity arose and we tried to looked out to find more about the website seeing its association with Google.

At the resources, labnol.org and stevenmcohen.pbworks.com, we found few screen shots of the older PDFMeNot.com website, so we became sure of its being acquired by the search engine behemoth – Google. But surprisingly, we could not find any news of Google’s buying, acquiring or shopping of PDFMeNot.com by searching “pdfmenot.com google” neither in Google nor in Google News.

PDFMeNot.com Compete screenshot

The Compete rank of PDFMeNot.com showed this screenshot which shows it getting down around November 2009, which should be the time of its acquisition by Google. The WhoIs records of the domain pdfmenot.com are private and the domain is hosted at nearlyfreespeech.net. Pinging the domain pdfmenot.com gives the IP 208.94.116.73. The domain was last updated on 8-Feb-2010.

Websiteoutlook.com evalutes PDFMeNot.com for US$ 19673.5 but we are sure that they must have been sold on much higher side. Anyone having updates?

There are many ways with which we can easily create PDF documents absolutely FREE. PDF is basically a machine independent format which is used anywhere we have to send formatted documents which need to be printed thereafter. People usually create their resumes, product brochures and reports in PDF which need not be altered anyhow.

The first and foremost method to create a PDF document is by using the Adobe Acrobat software which comes for over US$ 300 and has been released by the Adobe company which holds all of the copyrights & ownerships of PDF (Portable Document Format). After Adobe Acrobat there are many FREE and paid options available in the market and online using which we can easily create PDF documents. Some of them are outlined below:

The first FREE method to create a PDF document for FREE is by using Open Office which is an Open Source software and is available to download for FREE. We work in Open Office just as we work in Microsoft Word and it allows to save your files in another format called the PDF. Check out the kind of PDF documents Open Office creates before counting it on.

Another reliable offering that we can consider to create PDF documents is using the Adobe.com website which provides a trial subscription for creating PDF documents. These documents can later be sent through email. But we can bank upon it only when we have to create one or two small documents as this feature is limited by capacity and does not include access to one-on-one technical support.

Some other software that can be used to freely create PDF files are available at:

If you know any other tool using which we can easily create PDF files, please send it by contacting us. Thanks!!!

Adobe Flash movies can now be cached by the Google search engine. Try searching “filetype:swf (replace this text with your keyword)” in Google after remove double quotes and braces.

Adobe Flash movies can also be used for slide shows and presentations with some fantabulous effects for a true multimedia experience.

The Adobe company acquired Macromedia (alongwith its complete line of products including Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver, etc.) in December 2005.

Adobe Flash movies can display random data, or retrieve it from the databases, using XML files and interactivity, like user input and browsing criteria, can also be added into them.

Macromedia introduced Flash, then Splash, in the year 1996 and today you would find Adobe Flash Player on over 98% of the Internet enabled PCs & laptops.

Approximately 75% of online videos worldwide are views using Adobe’s Flash technology which make it the undisputed #1 format for videos on the Internet.

Adobe Flash has been written in C++ language and supports languages such as Action Script, C, C++, Perl, PHP, Python and Ruby.

Adobe Flash can manipulate vector as well as raster graphics and also supports bidirectional streaming of both audio and video.

Microsoft introduced Silverlight in the year 2007 in competition to Adobe Flash which has seen been used in streaming 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. W3C’s SVG and SMIL standards are also seen as closest competitors to Adobe Flash.

Adobe Flash Player best performs on Windows platform than on Mac OSX & Linux platforms.

Steve Jobs has openly criticized the stability of Flash, calling it a buggy software and saying that “..when one of Apple’s Macintosh computers crashes, ‘more often than not’, the cause can be attributed to Flash.”

PDF files found their use in the following:

Documents in an office

Document Archiving
Every office has papers involved in contracts, company reports, correspondence, guidelines & manuals. If they were to be stored as is, they would take too much of space and time. Try storing them in the form of scanned PDF files on CDs or DVDs which are searchable through keywords or file names.

You can easily create searchable PDF files using the Paper Capture feature of Adobe Acrobat through scanning. These files are then saved as catalogs and can be indexed for speedy retrieval.

Store Websites Easily
Ever tried the Web Capture feature of Adobe Acrobat software. If you are a web freak, a designer or a search engine marketer, then you must be involved in visiting a number of websites and evaluating them to come up with a best solution. In order to store these websites, you can use the Web Capture feature of Adobe Acrobat to copy and convert the content of the web pages (or an entire website) to a PDF file.

You can then browse through the stored website or web pages and keep them for any future use. This feature find its best use when you have to browse through the website while travelling and have interconnectivity problems. Web designers can easily create PDF files and send them to their clients for approval, comments, etc and believe me, the clients would be more than happy to see their webpages in PDF format.

Form Fill Up
Ever seen forms which expand due to the text inserted by you, the solution lies with Adobe Acrobat. Using the software you can easily create files which can then be filled in electronic PDF forms by your users who download. Unlike MS Word or MS Excel, PDF files don’t give a chance to the user to fill in any inappropriate thing and thus minimize the chances of the document getting unformatted.

Slide Shows & Presentations
Does that sound uncommon to you? Believe me, Adobe Acrobat can easily be used to create slide shows & multi-media presentations which have features such as hyperlinks, buttons and transitions. How about adding sound and video files to those slides for a true multimedia experience. Adobe Acrobat equips you with such kind of facilities with its software.

These slide shows & presentations can then be run in a full-screen mode wherein slides automatically advance after a certain period of time. (Microsoft PowerPoint presentations can easily be converted to a PDF presentation.)

Prepress Workflow
In the publishing business, documents are required to be printed before they are published to check & eliminate any printing errors. Once the printing errors are eliminated, the document is then sent to a process known as imagesetting. Adobe Acrobat provides a number of options for pre-press printing and error checking. Professional graphic artists & service bureau professionals use these features to find and eliminate potentially costly printing issues.

Before we get any further on converting PDF (Portable Document Format) to Flash we would first try to analyze both of these technologies to some depth to have a better understanding of each one of them. We would then see various scenarios under which the need to convert PDFs to Flash arises.

As the name PDF suggests, these are readable document files, you may also insert images and graphics though as in Microsoft Word, which are independent of the hardware & operating systems and can easily be opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader which is a freely downloadable application. Software such as Open Office and Google Documents also provide the functionality to open PDF documents. When we say that PDFs are readable document files, we mean that the end product doesn’t need to be edited by the reader and thus there are two different software introduced by Adobe (the creator of PDF):

Adobe Acrobat Reader – Free software to read PDF documents

Adobe Acrobat – Paid version with which you can create PDF documents

People prefer using a PDF file because necessary objects such as images, fonts, etc get embedded to it and the dependability over the user’s PC is minimized. A PDF file doesn’t provide editorial freedom and this is a boon for some people and companies in scenarios such as the following where you just can’t leave a chance for the file to be edited:

When you are sending your resume or presentation

when you are publishing an e-version of your print magazine

When you are sending or declaring your annual reports

While publishing product brochures and pamphlets

For keeping electronic records of older documents

When some document needs to be printed and the format needs to be preserved as is (independent of machine specifics)

There are times, though, when a PDF document can be used to get some data as an input from the user. These are used for surveys & bank forms which need to be printed.

The PDF file format combines the following three technologies:

A subset of the PostScript (.ps) page description programming language which is proprietary of Adobe. The PostScript is used for generating the layout & graphics of a Portable Document Format.

A font embedding or replacement system which allow the fonts used within the documents to be used as meta data within the file.

A structured storage system to bundle the above said elements and any other associated content, such as images or vectors, into a single PDF file, with/without data compression.
